Brand tracking tools that measure the conversation every week

Brand tracking tools measure how a brand is perceived and how that changes over time. MentionRadar tracks it from public data: mentions across the web, their sentiment, your share of voice against competitors and how often AI engines like ChatGPT name and recommend you.

  • Four brand metrics, updated continuously
  • Competitors measured with the same method
  • AI visibility score across up to five engines
  • Weekly or monthly PDF reports on Growth

Surveys and passive tracking measure different things

Classic brand tracking is a survey. A research panel asks a sample of your target market whether they know your brand, whether they would consider it and how it compares with rivals. Repeated every quarter, it shows awareness and preference among people who may never write a word about you online. Nothing built on public data can measure that, and we do not claim to.

Passive brand tracking measures what people actually say in public and what AI engines answer when buyers ask for advice. It costs a fraction of a survey wave, needs no questionnaire, updates continuously and covers competitors with the same method. Its blind spot is the silent majority. Its strength is that it shows the conversation that shapes buyers, week by week, and the AI answers that increasingly replace the first search.

Most teams end up using both: a survey once or twice a year for awareness, and MentionRadar for the weekly view in between.

The four metrics and how each is calculated

Every number on the dashboard comes from one place, so the panel, the PDF report and the API always agree. The full method is on the methodology page.

Brand tracking metrics with definitions and calculation
Metric What it tells you How it is calculated
Mentions How much the brand is talked about Count of unique public mentions in the period. Duplicates of the same page are removed by normalised address, and the brand is matched as a whole word.
Sentiment index Whether the talk is mostly good or bad Positive mentions minus negative mentions, divided by all mentions, times 100. Runs from -100 to +100.
AI visibility score How strongly AI engines put you forward Average over the latest run of each prompt and engine in the last 8 days. Recommended scores 100, named at position n scores 100 minus 15 for each place below first (minimum 40), not named scores 0.
Share of voice Your slice of the category conversation Web share is your mentions divided by the total for your brand and tracked competitors. AI share uses how many of the latest AI answers name each brand. The combined figure is the average of the two.

Share of voice is where tracking becomes comparison

A brand metric on its own is hard to read. Is 2,400 mentions a month good? It depends on whether your closest competitor has 1,200 or 9,000. Share of voice answers that by putting every tracked brand on the same scale.

MentionRadar reports it twice. Web share of voice comes from public mentions. AI share comes from the latest answers of each engine. The two often disagree, and the gap is useful: a brand that leads the web conversation but trails in AI answers usually lacks the comparison articles and reviews that engines like to cite.

For a deeper look at this metric, see the share of voice tool. To watch rivals' launches and coverage directly, use MentionRadar as a competitor monitoring tool.

A tracking routine that fits in one hour a month

  1. 1

    Fix the competitor set

Choose the rivals buyers actually compare you with and keep the set stable, otherwise share of voice moves for reasons that have nothing to do with you.

  2. 2

    Pick category prompts

Write the questions buyers ask AI engines, such as "best note taking app for researchers". These drive the AI visibility score, so change them rarely.

  3. 3

    Read the monthly report

Growth sends a scheduled PDF with all four metrics, the change against last month and the top mentions. Agencies send it white-labelled.

  4. 4

    Explain one movement

Each month, explain the biggest change with the mentions or AI citations behind it. That habit turns a dashboard into decisions.

If the AI half of brand tracking is your main concern, the AI visibility tracker page explains prompt selection, engines per plan and citation sources.

Questions about brand tracking tools

Is MentionRadar a replacement for a brand tracking survey?

Not entirely. A survey asks a sample of people about awareness, consideration and preference, including people who never post anything. MentionRadar measures what is publicly said and what AI engines answer. Many teams use a survey once or twice a year and MentionRadar for the weekly view in between.

Which brand metrics does MentionRadar track?

Mention volume, sentiment index, share of voice on the web and in AI answers, and the AI visibility score. Each is calculated the same way for your brand and every tracked competitor, so the comparison is fair.

How is the AI visibility score calculated?

For each tracked prompt and engine, the latest run scores 100 if the engine recommends you, 100 minus 15 points for each position below first if it names you without recommending (never below 40), and 0 if you are not named. The score is the average over runs from the last eight days.

How often are the numbers updated?

New web mentions are collected every 15 minutes on paid plans, so mention volume, sentiment and web share of voice move during the day. AI prompts run weekly, so AI visibility and AI share move once a week.

Can I track competitors with the same metrics?

Yes. Starter tracks 3 competitors, Growth and Agency 10, Enterprise 25 per workspace. Their mentions and AI answers are collected with the same matching rules, which is what makes share of voice meaningful.

How much do brand tracking tools cost with MentionRadar?

Starter is $24 a month billed yearly or $49 month to month. Growth is $74 a month yearly and adds all five AI engines, citation sources and scheduled PDF reports. There are no per-engine add-ons and every price is public.
