MentionRadar

Share of voice tool that counts the web and AI answers

A share of voice tool measures how much of the conversation in your category is about your brand compared with your competitors. MentionRadar calculates it twice, from web mentions and from AI engine answers, and combines both into one percentage for each brand.

  • Web share from every collected mention
  • AI share from the latest engine runs
  • One combined share per brand
  • Negative mentions counted per competitor

One brand, three shares, one picture

Northwind Coffee, in the screen above, leads the web conversation and trails in AI answers. That is a common pattern for a brand with an active community and a loyal press list, but few comparison pages and reviews of the kind AI engines cite.

A single share of voice number would hide that. MentionRadar shows the web share, the AI share and the combined share side by side, with the negative mention count for every brand, so the story behind the number is visible at a glance.

How share of voice is calculated

The same formulas drive the dashboard, the PDF report and the API, so every number you share can be traced back to its inputs.

Web share of voice

Mentions of your brand

Mentions of your brand and all tracked competitors

× 100

Counted from every web mention collected in the selected period, across news, blogs, forums, Reddit, Hacker News, review sites, YouTube and X. Duplicate URLs are merged before counting.

AI share of voice

AI answers that name your brand

Sum of AI answers naming each tracked brand

× 100

Counted from the latest run of every prompt and engine pair in the last 8 days. An answer that names three brands adds one to each of them.

Combined share

Web share plus AI share

2

A plain average of the two percentages, so a strong web presence cannot mask an absence from AI answers. If one side has no data yet, the combined share equals the other side.

How the numbers add up for three coffee brands

Round numbers for clarity. Thirty days of web mentions and the latest weekly AI runs, the inputs behind the chart at the top of this page.

Share of voice calculation for three coffee brands
Brand Web mentions Web share AI answers naming it AI share Combined
Northwind Coffee (you) 420 42.0% 18 37.5% 39.8%
Brightpath Roasters 310 31.0% 24 50.0% 40.5%
Harbor Beans 270 27.0% 6 12.5% 19.8%
Total 1,000 100% 48 100% rounded

Northwind's web share is 420 out of 1,000, or 42.0%. In AI answers it was named 18 times out of 48 brand appearances, or 37.5%. The combined share is the average of the two, (42.0 + 37.5) / 2, which rounds to 39.8%.

Brightpath has fewer web mentions but leads overall, because AI engines name it in half of all appearances. That gap is the action item. The AI visibility tracker shows which prompts and cited pages give Brightpath the edge.

Reading share of voice next to sentiment

Share of voice counts every mention, whatever its tone. That is deliberate: a story the whole market is talking about is voice, good or bad. It also means a rising share needs a second look. In the chart, week 4 brings a jump in negative mentions. Share of voice rose that week, and it rose for the wrong reason.

The sentiment index, positive minus negative mentions divided by all mentions, is the quickest check. A share that grows while the index holds steady is earned attention. A share that grows while the index falls is a problem to route to support or PR. More on how tone is scored is on the page about social sentiment tracking.

Choose the competitor set with the same care. Include the brands buyers actually compare you with, not the largest names in the market, or your share will look small for reasons that do not matter. To follow those rivals beyond the percentage, use competitor monitoring.

Questions about measuring share of voice

What is share of voice?

Share of voice is your part of the total conversation in a market, compared with a defined set of competitors. In MentionRadar it is the number of mentions of your brand divided by the mentions of your brand and all tracked competitors together, calculated for web mentions and for AI answers.

How is AI share of voice calculated?

MentionRadar takes the latest run of every prompt and engine pair from the last 8 days and counts how many of those answers name each brand. Your AI share is your count divided by the sum of the counts of all tracked brands. An answer that names three brands counts once for each of them.

Why combine web and AI share of voice?

They measure two places buyers look. A brand can lead the web conversation and still be missing from AI answers, or the other way round. The combined share is the simple average of both, so neither side hides the other, and both components stay visible next to it.

How many competitors can I compare?

Starter compares your brand with 3 competitors, Growth with 10, Agency with 10 per client workspace and Enterprise with 25 per workspace. Each competitor is tracked as its own keyword with exclusion words, so the counts stay clean.

Does share of voice include sentiment?

Share of voice counts mentions regardless of tone, because a loud negative story is still voice. Next to it, MentionRadar shows the number of negative mentions per brand and a sentiment index, so a rising share driven by complaints is easy to spot.

Can I report share of voice to leadership or clients?

Yes. Starter exports to CSV. Growth adds scheduled weekly and monthly PDF reports that include share of voice, and the Agency plan adds white-label reports with the client logo.
