AI rank tracker for the shortlists AI engines give buyers
An AI rank tracker records the position at which AI engines name your brand when they answer a buying question. MentionRadar runs your prompts weekly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, reads the numbered list in each answer and records your position against competitors.
- Position parsed from every answer
- Your rank next to competitors, week by week
- Prompt by engine matrix in one view
- Recommendations tracked separately from mentions
Why an AI rank is not a search result position
A classic rank tracker answers a stable question. For this keyword, in this location, which of your pages sits where among ten blue links? The page is the unit, the list is long, and a position on Monday is usually close to the position on Tuesday.
An AI answer breaks each of those assumptions. The unit is your brand, not a page. The list is short, often three to seven names, and the reader rarely looks past the first few. The answer is generated fresh every time, so the same prompt can list you second this week and fourth next week without anything changing on your side. And there is no single index: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews each build their answer differently.
That is why an AI rank tracker records more than a number. Every run stores whether you were named at all, your place in the list, whether the answer recommended you and who else appeared. The trend over several weekly runs is the signal; one answer on its own is an anecdote. If you want the broader picture beyond position, see how we measure AI search visibility.
How a position is read from an AI answer
No model judges your rank. The verdict comes from a parser that reads the text of the answer, so the same answer always gives the same result.
“Best commuter e-bike under 3,000” · ChatGPT · weekly run
- 1. Ridgeline Cycles Metro, long range and a sturdy frame Competitor
- 2. Kestrel Bikes Commute 2, light, with integrated lights and a belt drive You, #2, recommended
- 3. Brightpath Bikes City, comfortable upright position Competitor
- 4. Fieldnote Urban, budget option with a removable battery Not tracked

1
Store the full answer
Each prompt runs once a week in every engine on your plan, and the complete text of the answer is saved with the run, so you can always reread what the engine said.
-
2
Find the list
The parser reads the answer line by line and picks up numbered items such as "1." or "2)". Headings and formatting are cleaned up first so the numbering survives.
-
3
Match your brand
Your brand is matched as a whole word in the item name and the start of the line. Your position is the number of the first item that names you.
-
4
Record competitors
The other names in the list are stored as competitors for that run, and the competitors in your workspace are matched by name.
-
5
Mark the recommendation
A place in the top three counts as a recommendation. In an answer without a list, explicit words such as "recommend" or "best" next to your name do the same, and position stays empty instead of being guessed.
Every prompt in every engine, in one matrix
Rank by prompt tells you where to act. A row that is strong in four engines and empty in one points to a single engine problem, while an empty row points to missing coverage across the web.
| Prompt | ChatGPT | Gemini | Perplexity | Claude | AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best commuter e-bike under 3,000 | #2 | #1 rec | #1 | #4 | #2 |
| Lightest e-bike for city riding | #1 rec | #3 | #1 rec | not named | #2 |
| E-bike with belt drive and low maintenance | #5 | not named | #3 | not named | #6 |
| Kestrel Bikes vs Ridgeline Cycles | #1 rec | #2 | #1 rec | #2 | #1 rec |
| Best e-bike brands for winter commuting | not named | not named | #6 | not named | not named |
The last row is typical. A seasonal question where the brand barely appears is a content and coverage gap, not a ranking glitch. Position is also one of the inputs to the overall AI visibility score.
Classic rank tracker or AI rank tracker
Both answer the question "where do we stand", for two different places buyers look. A comparison by category of tool.
| Question | Classic rank tracker | AI rank tracker in MentionRadar |
|---|---|---|
| What is tracked | Keywords and the URLs that rank for them | Prompts and the brands named in answers |
| Where | Search engine result pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews |
| Result per check | Position of a URL, often 1 to 100 | Named or not, list position, recommended or not |
| Competitors | Domains ranking for the same keyword | Brands named in the same answer |
| Why it moves | Page changes, links, algorithm updates | New pages and reviews, model updates, run to run variation |
| Typical cadence | Daily | Weekly, read as a trend over several runs |
| Extra insight | Search features on the page | Pages the engine cites, on Growth and higher |
| Web mentions alongside |
The two views meet in Google AI Overviews, where a generated answer sits above the organic results you already track. Rank is one input to the overall score in the AI visibility tracker, and on its own it hides who is winning the conversation outside AI. Pair it with competitor monitoring to see the launches, reviews and complaints that move a rival up or down the list.
Questions about AI rank tracking
What does an AI rank tracker measure?
It measures where your brand appears in the answers AI engines give to the questions you track. For each prompt and engine it records whether you were named, your place in the list of products the answer gives, whether you were recommended and which competitors appeared above or below you.
How is a position in an AI answer determined?
MentionRadar reads the answer line by line and picks up numbered list items, such as "1." or "2)". Your position is the number of the first item that names your brand. If the answer is plain prose without a list, the run records whether you were named and recommended, and position stays empty instead of being guessed.
Why does my AI rank change from week to week?
AI answers are generated fresh each time, so wording and order vary between runs even when nothing changed on the web. New reviews, articles and threads also shift answers in engines that search the web. Look at the trend over several weekly runs rather than one result.
How many prompts can I track?
Starter tracks 15 prompts a week in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Growth tracks 40 prompts in all five engines, Agency 150 and Enterprise 300. Each prompt runs once a week in every engine on your plan.
Is an AI rank tracker a replacement for a classic rank tracker?
No. A classic rank tracker measures your pages on search result pages, and that still drives a large share of traffic. An AI rank tracker measures your brand inside generated answers. Most teams keep both, and Google AI Overviews sit where the two meet.
Can I see which competitors outrank me?
Yes. Every run stores the other names in the list, and the competitors you add to your workspace are matched by name. Every weekly run is kept in your history, so you can compare your position with theirs week after week.
