AI overview tracking that shows when Google names your brand

AI overview tracking checks the summaries Google shows above search results and records whether your brand appears in them. MentionRadar runs your tracked prompts weekly in Google AI Overviews and logs mention, position, recommendation, competitors and cited pages, on every plan.

  • Google AI Overviews included on every plan
  • Brand, position and competitors per prompt
  • Weekly history for every tracked prompt
  • Same prompts compared with ChatGPT and Perplexity

What AI overview tracking records each week

Every tracked prompt that runs in Google AI Overviews produces one record. These are its fields, with the values from the screen above.

Fields stored for each AI Overviews run
Field What it tells you Value in the screen above
Overview text The summary as Google showed it, kept so you can read the wording, not just a score Three office subscription options
Mentioned Your brand appears in the overview as a whole word Yes
Position Your place when the overview is a list #1
Recommended Listed in the top three or described as the best pick Yes
Competitors named Every other brand in the same overview Brightpath Roasters, Harbor Bean Co.
Cited pages (Growth+) Links shown as sources, your own domain marked officeperks-guide.com, reddit.com, northwindcoffee.com
Run date When the weekly run happened, for the history chart Tuesday of week 41

Google AI Overviews is one of five engines in MentionRadar. The same record exists for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, which is how the overall AI search visibility picture is built.

Which prompts trigger an AI Overview

Google does not show an overview for every search. It decides per query, and the pattern is fairly consistent: overviews appear for questions that need several sources to answer, and stay away from searches where the user clearly wants one website.

For tracking, that has a practical consequence. A prompt written as a buyer's question returns an overview far more often than a two word keyword, and a prompt that never triggers one adds nothing to your data. Review your list after the first few weekly runs and replace prompts that keep coming back empty.

Write prompts in the words your customers use. "Coffee subscription that works for a 12 person office" is closer to real demand than "office coffee", and it is the kind of question where the overview names brands.

Often show an overview

  • Best tool or product for a stated need
  • How to choose between options
  • Comparisons of two or more brands
  • Problem questions with a buying angle
  • Alternatives to a known product

Rarely show one

  • Your brand name on its own
  • Login and pricing page searches
  • Very short generic keywords
  • Local searches answered by a map
  • Breaking news queries

Position in Google AI Overviews over eight weeks

The history view for one prompt, filtered to AI Overviews. A line closer to the top means an earlier place in the overview.

In this chart, Northwind climbs from fourth to first over two months. The cited pages for those weeks tell the story: a buyer's guide that added Northwind in week 36, then the brand's own comparison page cited from week 39.

Position history across all engines lives in the AI rank tracker. Filtering to one engine is useful when Google moves and ChatGPT does not, because the fix usually sits in the sources that one engine reads.

Why AI Overviews need their own line in your report

They sit above the links

When an overview appears, it is the first thing a searcher reads. Being named there can matter more than the rank of your own page further down.

They cite other people's pages

Overviews lean on reviews, forums and guides. Your web mentions on those sites, tracked by the same social listening tool, often explain why you are named or missing.

They are part of answer engine work

Getting named in summaries is the goal of answer engine optimization. The AEO tool page has a checklist that applies to overviews as much as to chat answers.

Questions about AI overview tracking

What is AI overview tracking?

It is the practice of checking, on a schedule, what Google AI Overviews say for a fixed set of questions and whether your brand is part of the summary. MentionRadar records the overview text, whether you are named, your position, whether you are recommended, which competitors appear and, on Growth and higher, which pages the overview cites.

Does every search show an AI Overview?

No. Google decides per query whether to show one, and it tends to appear for longer, research style questions more than for short brand or navigational searches. That is why tracked prompts work best when they are written the way a buyer asks a question, not as two word keywords.

Is AI Overviews tracking included on the Starter plan?

Yes. Starter runs 15 prompts weekly in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Growth runs 40 prompts in all five engines and adds citation sources, Agency runs 150 prompts and Enterprise 300.

How is this different from a rank tracker?

A rank tracker records where your page sits among the classic blue links. AI overview tracking records whether your brand is named inside the summary above them, which can be true even when your own page ranks low, because the overview often cites review sites and forums that mention you.

How often are overviews checked?

Every tracked prompt runs once a week. Overviews change between runs, so a weekly series on a fixed prompt set shows real movement more clearly than occasional manual searches.

Can I see AI Overviews next to other engines?

Yes. The same prompts run in every engine on your plan, so the prompt by engine matrix shows whether you are named in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity side by side, and Gemini and Claude from Growth upward.
