Sprout Social does not publish a price for Listening. It is a paid add-on available from the Standard plan up, sold through a demo, and users commonly report quotes around $999 a month on top of seat fees. Seats cost $199, $299 or $399 per user per month billed yearly, and Vendr's buyer data puts the median Sprout contract at about $18,980 a year. If you need listening without the publishing suite, a dedicated tool such as MentionRadar costs $49 to $499 a month and also tracks what ChatGPT and Perplexity say about your brand.

Sprout is a good social media management platform. Scheduling, the shared inbox and reporting are why most teams buy it. Listening is the part that surprises people, because the price page shows seat costs clearly and then sends you to sales for the one module that tells you what people say about you outside your own profiles.

This post puts the numbers in one place: what the plans cost, what the Listening add-on adds, what a realistic bill looks like for a small US team, and which alternatives cover the listening job for less.

How much is Sprout Social listening?

Sprout Social Listening has no public list price. Sprout's pricing page says Listening and Premium Analytics are each available as individual add-ons to the Standard plan and up, and the button leads to a demo. The figure buyers cite most is around $999 a month, roughly $12,000 a year, but that number comes from user reports, not from Sprout.

Vendr, which tracks real software contracts, says Social Listening in particular can double or triple total contract value depending on the number of topics, keywords and users. In other words the add-on is priced on volume, so two teams with the same seats can get very different quotes.

Sprout Social plans and seat prices

Before the add-on, you pay per seat. These are the list prices on sproutsocial.com/pricing, checked in October 2026.

The brand keyword monitoring in the base plans is not the same thing as Listening. It watches a small set of terms on the networks Sprout connects to. The add-on is where topic queries, sentiment at scale, Smart Categories, spike alerts and trend analysis live. Sprout offers a 30 day trial of the platform with no card, which is useful for the publishing side, but the listening quote still comes from a sales call.

What a realistic Sprout bill looks like

Take a common US setup: a three person marketing team on Standard that wants listening for the brand and two competitors. Three seats at $199 come to $597 a month, or $7,164 a year. Add the commonly reported $999 a month for Listening and the total lands near $19,150 a year, which sits right on Vendr's median of about $18,980 across 361 purchases.

Line itemMonthlyYearly
3 Standard seats at $199$597$7,164
Listening add-on (user reported, not list)About $999About $11,988
TotalAbout $1,596About $19,152

Vendr's tracked contracts range from about $6,281 to $55,000 a year. Annual billing is standard, and renewals commonly rise 3 to 7 percent unless you negotiate a cap. Seats can usually be added mid term, while removing them often waits until renewal.

Is Sprout Social listening worth it?

Sprout Listening is worth it if your team already lives in Sprout for publishing and engagement and wants listening data in the same reports, with sentiment and spike alerts across the social networks you manage. Having one login for scheduling, inbox and listening saves real time for a busy social team.

It is harder to justify when listening is the main job. If you mostly need to know when you are mentioned in news, blogs, Reddit, review sites and forums, and you report on that monthly, you are paying seat fees for a publishing suite you may not use much. There is also a newer gap. Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews which vendor to choose, and Sprout's listening page does not describe tracking how those AI answers mention your brand.

What MentionRadar covers, and what it does not

MentionRadar is a social listening tool built for the listening job alone. It collects mentions from news sites, blogs, forums, Reddit, Hacker News, review sites, YouTube and X, scores the sentiment of each one and estimates reach. Alerts go out by email on every plan and to Slack from Growth. The same workspace runs your buying questions every week in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, plus Gemini and Claude from Growth, and records whether you are named, your position and which competitors appear instead.

It does not monitor Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, and it does not publish posts or run a social inbox. If your team needs those, keep a publishing tool. Many teams drop Sprout to Standard seats for the people who publish and move listening to a cheaper tool, which removes the add-on from the contract.

PlanMonthlyBilled yearlyWhat you get
Starter$49$24 a month3 keywords, 3 competitors, 5,000 mentions a month, 15 AI prompts weekly, 1 seat
Growth$149$74 a month30,000 mentions, 40 prompts in five AI engines, cited pages, 5 seats, Slack alerts
Agency$499$249 a month15 client workspaces, 150 prompts, white-label reports, 15 seats
Enterprise$999$499 a month300 prompts, unlimited seats, SSO, audit log, uptime SLA

Growth billed yearly comes to $888 a year for five seats, against roughly $12,000 a year for the Listening add-on alone in the reported Sprout quotes. Full limits are on the MentionRadar pricing page.

How to cut a Sprout Social listening quote

If you decide to stay, a few moves reliably lower the number. Start talks 60 to 90 days before renewal, because the end of Sprout's quarter is when reps have the most room. Ask for Listening priced on the exact topics you need, usually your brand, your product names and two or three competitors, rather than a broad bundle. Ask for a renewal cap of 3 to 5 percent in writing. Remove seats you do not use before the renewal date, since they are hard to drop mid term.

Bring a real alternative to the call. A written quote from another listening tool, or a month of data from a cheaper one running side by side, is the strongest argument you have. Sprout reps also see competing offers from Hootsuite and Buffer often, so naming the tool you are testing is normal.

Listening is also only half of competitive research. If you want to see the paid side, such as which offers a rival is pushing this month, an ad spy tool for competitor ads covers what a listening feed will not show.

Does Sprout Social have social listening on every plan?

No. Essentials has no brand keyword monitoring and cannot add Listening. Standard, Professional and Advanced include a small brand keyword monitor, 10 keywords per group on Standard and Professional and 20 on Advanced, and can buy the full Listening add-on. Enterprise listening is part of a custom quote.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Sprout Social listening?

Yes. Dedicated listening tools start far lower. MentionRadar Starter is $49 a month or $288 a year and covers web mentions plus AI answer tracking. Mentionlytics starts at $49 a month billed yearly and Awario at EUR 29. The trade off is that none of them include Sprout's publishing and inbox tools.

The short answer

Sprout Social listening is a quoted add-on, commonly reported near $999 a month, on top of seats that cost $199 to $399 per user. A typical three seat team with listening pays about $19,000 a year. If publishing is your main job, that bundle can make sense.
